The current USC baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Sunday . However, one former Trojans standout is still making a name for himself in MLB.
Former USC pitcher Kyle Hurt has been a key weapon out of the bullpen for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. Through 21 appearances on the year, Hurt has an ERA of 2.57 with five holds.
On May 27, Hurt recorded his first career MLB save. He pitched the ninth inning of the Dodgers' 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies , retiring all three batters that he faced.
Hurt pitched at USC from 2018-2020 and was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He was traded to the Dodgers in 2021 and made his MLB debut with the team in 2023. Early in the 2024 season, however, Hurt underwent Tommy John surgery that kept him out for each of the team's World Series titles over the past two years, before returning to the mound this April.
Hurt's pitching coach with the Dodgers is fellow former Trojans star Mark Prior. In 2001, Prior helped lead USC to its most recent College World Series appearance. Now, the two Trojans have traded in their Cardinal and Gold for Dodger Blue as they chase a different type of World Series title.
