Former Wisconsin quarterback Mabrey Mettauer plans to reenter the NCAA transfer portal, according to 247Sports' Matt Zenitz.
Mettauer started his career with the Badgers in 2024, joining the program as a four-star recruit who was No. 464 overall, No. 31 at his position and No. 74 in the state of Texas. He committed to play for a Wisconsin offense led at the time by Phil Longo. Longo was fired toward the end of the 2024 campaign, prompting a top-down overhaul of the team's quarterback room, which included Mettauer's departure.
The signal-caller appeared in three games during his one season as a Badger. He completed his only pass attempt for two yards.
The Woodlands, Texas, native followed Longo to Sam Houston State in 2025, where the air-raid offensive coordinator was hired as the coach. Mettauer appeared in six games during the team's disappointing two-win 2025 season, completing 59% of his passes for 294 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
The quarterback plans to reenter the portal when it opens on Jan. 2 with three years of eligibility remaining.
Separate from Mettauer's college path, Wisconsin is poised for another quarterback-room overhaul this offseason. The program is looking for an offensive spark after it averaged 12.8 points per game this season, which ranked 135th of 136 Football Bowl Subdivision programs.
The Badgers have had a new starting quarterback every season since 2022. The 2026 campaign will be no different. The question is which veteran fills the role.
Two Wisconsin players have announced plans to enter the portal: safety Remington Moss and wide receiver Kyan Berry-Johnson . The player movement will pick up as the weeks pass.
