Josh Heupel was hoping for good news from Legend Bey on signing day .
The Tennessee football coach knew wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope had built firm relationships with Bey and his family, which continued after Bey committed to Tennessee then flipped to Ohio State.
"Kelsey certainly did a great job of flipping him back," Heupel said.
Bey flipped back to the Vols on Dec. 3, signing with Tennessee and not the Buckeyes . He is a four-star athlete from Forney, Texas, who can play running back or wide receiver. He is the No. 175 prospect in the 247Sports Composite.
"Just a dynamic tool that we have an opportunity to add to the offensive arsenal," Heupel said.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Bey originally committed to Tennessee in June. He flipped to Ohio State in November following an official visit to Columbus, Ohio.
Heupel lauded Bey as a "special playmaker" and a "unique tool." Bey plays quarterback in high school, which impressed Heupel as he had command of the offense and threw the ball well. But it is his playmaking skills that made Bey such a coveted prospect. Heupel noted he can be used in space, on perimeter screens and can catch passes well downfield. He also can be used as a returner.
Tennessee also flipped four-star defensive lineman Carter Gooden , who had been committed to UCLA. Gooden is a 6-4, 260-pounder from Marion, Massachusetts. He is ranked the No. 17 edge rusher and No. 147 player overall in the 247Sports Composite.
