Fresh Faces on the Forty: Get to know Auburn WR Cam Coleman
The Longhorns portal pursuits are nearing their end, which means it’s time to take stock of the addition Steve Sarkisian and his staff made. While the high school recruits are an incredibly interesting group, the portal class really stole the show. One name in particular caught every Longhorn fan's eye the second he jumped in the portal: Cam Coleman.
Let’s start our series with the “crown jewel” of the Longhorns portal class.
Coleman has racked up 97 catches, 1,306 yards and 13 TDs throughout his two years at Auburn. During his freshman season, it was clear he had remarkable ability. He quickly became one of the best 50/50 ball catchers in the country, including multiple highlight plays. His length and catch radius is as good as you will find and he brings back the redzone threat Adonai Mitchell and Matthew Golden brought to the table.
This feels very akin to the Adonai Mitchell addition before the 2023 season. The 50/50 ball ability, the redzone threat, the elite long speed on deep shots and elite body control. He will play the same position as Mitchell, the “X” receiver. Simply put, the X WR is the outside WR you consistently attempt to get into 1-on-1 coverage. It’s a position the Longhorns didn’t really have this season and one Sarkisian needs for his offense to thrive.
This addition not only gives Texas a true matchup nightmare on the outside, but it pushes Emmett Mosley V to the slot. In my opinion, that is a place he can thrive. Mosley’s route running ability is very strong, he has a great understanding of zones and finding openings and can be a true threat on fade routes.
The addition of Cam Coleman is possibly season changing. There is no doubt about that. That being said, Adonai Mitchell had Xavier Worthy. Matthew Golden had Isaiah Bond and Gunnar Helm. If Cam Coleman is going to be the elite WR he’s capable of being, Ryan Wingo needs to be a true difference maker. He needs to create in the screen game, avoid the drops that plagued him this year and force defenses to play man coverage on Coleman. If that can happen, Coleman could break Longhorn receiving records.
It’s no secret the success of the Texas offense has and always will come down to offensive line play. Texas needs a run game and Arch Manning needs more time and less hits. If that doesn’t happen, Coleman’s potential will continue to be just that but make no mistake about it, Coleman could be as good a WR Texas has seen in some time.
