Georgia Tech sits at 1-3 after a loss to Stanford , but the story isn't just about the record. Two specific players have stepped up when the team needed them most. They are proving that the roster has depth even as the season hits a rough patch. While the standings look messy, individual performances tell a different tale.
Maddox Carries the Load
Running back Trelain Maddox is the first name that jumps off the page. He has dealt with injuries for years, yet he works harder than anyone. He was named a permanent team captain this summer, one of only four players to get the role. His impact shows up everywhere on the field. He blocks, runs, catches, and plays on all four special teams units.

Against Stanford, Maddox had his first career multi-touchdown game. He rushed for 40 yards and a score while adding 48 receiving yards and another touchdown. He is a weapon who refuses to stay on the bench. His versatility makes him a pleasant surprise for a team that struggled early.
Penson Finds His Groove
Wide receiver Dalen Penson is the second big story. Nobody knew how good he would be after moving from cornerback to receiver. Before the season began, significant doubts surrounded the wide receiver group. Penson has answered those doubts by becoming a go-to player on offense. He leads the team in receiving yards and creates explosive plays when the defense expects nothing.
The shift from defense to offense required a new mindset. Penson adapted quickly and became a reliable target. The offense's ability to advance the ball periodically stems largely from him. His ability to stretch the field gives the quarterback a real weapon to throw to. This transition was risky, but the results speak for themselves.

Belief in the System
Despite the 1-3 record, the team shows flashes of belief. Head Coach Brent Key demands accountability from everyone, including himself. Following the match, he instructed the players to examine their own reflections. The offense struggled with penalties and missed assignments, but the players still fight. Stanford's quarterback threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns, exposing Tech's defense. Yet, the Jackets kept the game close until the end.
The team has to fix its discipline issues to win more games. If these two players keep performing, the season can turn around quickly.
Georgia Tech has to clean up the penalties and play with more focus. The talent is there, as Maddox and Penson have shown. The next game is the chance to prove the 1-3 start was a fluke.
