The Georgia Tech linebacker group is the most reliable part of the roster right now. With a mix of returning veterans and smart coaching, this unit has the depth to handle whatever comes their way in the 2026.
The season starts in about one week. Fall camp is wrapping up after the second scrimmage. While other parts of the roster get all the talk, the linebackers are quietly getting ready to play high-level football. This group has the right blend of young talent and proven players to make a real impact.

Veteran Presence and Coaching Depth
Experience matters when things get tough. The Yellow Jackets are bringing back four key veterans to lead the defense. These players include Kyle Efford, E.J. Lightsey, Melvin Jordan, and Cayman Spaulding. You cannot teach that kind of experience or time in the room. Having guys who know the system is just as important as having fast players.
The coaching staff is also a big reason why this group looks solid. According to Yahoo Sports CFB, the development of this unit relies heavily on several young coaches. Coach Brent Key highlighted the work done by coaches like Jack Tyler and Nate. He also noted the impact of coaches like Ace Ayinde Eley, who helps the players prepare both on and off the field.
Key believes the way he uses his players helps them succeed. He said, "I think Kyle is playing as good of football as he's played because of the positions that Jason is putting him in," per Yahoo Sports CFB.

Versatility is the Key to Success
A good defense needs players who can do more than one job. This group has the ability to switch roles without missing a beat. The linebackers can move between the mike and will positions easily. This flexibility makes the whole defense harder to plan against.
The talent is spread across the whole room. Yahoo Sports CFB reported that E.J. Lightsey and Kyle Efford can both play multiple spots. This depth is vital because injuries happen to everyone eventually. If one guy goes down, the next man in line knows exactly what to do. It is like having a backup brisket in the smoker; you are always prepared for a change in plans.
Cayman Spaulding is also finding a new rhythm. Key mentioned that Spaulding has been the best version of himself for three and a half weeks. The player has learned to let go of past emotional struggles to focus on the game. This mental shift is helping him pick up the defense and communicate better with the rest of the unit.

A Unit Coming Together at the Right Time
Timing is everything in football. You want your players hitting their stride right as the lights come on. Right now, this group is playing outstanding football. They are finding their rhythm just as the season approaches. It is not just about talent; it is about how they work as a single unit.
The coaching staff is putting in the work to make sure these players are ready. By focusing on development and versatility, Georgia Tech is building a foundation that can last. If the linebackers can play at this level, the rest of the defense will follow. This is the group to watch as the Yellow Jackets head into their new season.
