Germany and Bayern Munich rising star Lennart Karl will miss the 2026 World Cup after suffering an injury in training, the German federation confirmed Friday, June 5.
The 18-year-old was the youngest player included on Julian Nagelsmann's roster, having already played more than two-dozen matches with the German power and debuting with the national team in March friendly matches against Switzerland and Ghana, then playing in a pre-tournament match against Finland.

Karl suffered a muscle tear in his leg during a training session ahead of Germany's final friendly ahead of its World Cup opener and won't be able to recover in time to participate. Teams can replace injured players until their opening contest.
"I feel incredibly sorry for Lenny," Nagelsmann said in a news release. "With his light‑heartedness, his creativity, his pace, and his personality, he fit into the team perfectly. It is a huge shock for him and for all of us that he will miss the World Cup. It is only a small consolation that he is young and still has many tournaments ahead of him. We would have loved to have him in the team."
Who will replace Lennart Karl on the Germany World Cup roster?
In Karl's place comes another young prospect, with 20-year-old RB Leipzig midfielder Assan Ouédraogo set to travel to Germany's base camp in North Carolina to join the squad.

"With Assan Ouédraogo we are now getting a player who, similar to Lenny, had a great start with us," Nagelsmann said. "He is also highly talented and is meant to play here boldly and freely."
