New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole recently made his first injury rehab start. The right-hander surrendered three earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched in an appearance at Double-A. Although his numbers do not jump off the page, Cole was still encouraged by the outing .
"Just a lot of strike throwing and pretty solid delivery overall, from a little bit of the stuff I've looked at," Cole said, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Cole pitched toward the end of spring training as well. However, he was still building up. The Yankees are understandably taking a cautious approach with the 35-year-old as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
The fact that Cole has begun pitching in injury rehab starts is promising, though. Assuming no setbacks occur, it may not be too long before he returns to the Yankees' starting rotation. For now, it has yet to be revealed when his next rehab start will be.
Overall, the Yankees hold an 11-9 record at the moment. It has been an up and down start to the new campaign for New York. The ball club has displayed signs of promise, however.
Their situation will only improve once Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return. Rodon is recovering from an elbow injury as well. The return of the All-Star starting pitchers will unquestionably give the Yankees a crucial boost.
The team's next game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon against the Kansas City Royals , with first pitch at 1:35 PM EST in New York at Yankee Stadium.
