The New York Yankees have been without Gerrit Cole since 2024 after Tommy John surgery, but the righty is beginning to work his way back to the starting rotation. A lot has changed in New York since Cole's injury, and the prospect of getting him back near the top of the rotation with Cam Schlittler is something that should excite Yankees fans.
Cole still has a way to go before being back in New York after throwing just 60 pitches in his third start in AA, but the early returns are promising. The Yankees will next need a fifth starter on May 5, but they'll need to find someone else to take the start, as both Cole and Carlos Rodon are making rehab starts in AA.
Cole made just 17 starts in 2024 before suffering his injury. He had a 3.41 ERA and was nearing a fourth-consecutive All-Star appearance. There may not be much gas left in the tank after 12 seasons and a major elbow injury, but the Yankees believe that Cole can contribute to their pursuit of the AL East division title.
It hasn't been all smooth sailing for Cole, as his first AA start was a 4.1 inning outing with three earned runs. He has also made a start in High-A with Hudson Valley , and will likely get a chance to move up for a start with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. There is still no certain timeline for Cole's return, but Yankees fans can be sure that, barring any setbacks, Gerrit Cole will be back dealing at Yankee Stadium soon.
