They say youth will rule the day, and around the Bay Area, it appears that day has already arrived in August 2026. The San Francisco Giants , now in the midst of a full-on youth movement, recently promoted their two top prospects to roster spots in nearby San Jose.
And the spectacular set of shortstops is knocking nearby on the door of Major League Baseball... just south, off Exit 386.

Josuar Gonzales and Luis Hernandez were promoted late last month to the Single-A San Jose Giants. The two teen shortstops were the top international signees in their respective classes in 2025 and 2026. So far, so good, as the duo has already settled into the first level of full-season baseball
Gonzalez,18, is the Giants' No. 1 prospect and is ranked 15th overall by MLB Pipeline. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Hernandez is right on his heels in the second slot within the organization's list of top hopefuls. They have both baffled scouts and coaches with their big-league-ready approach and mature attitude.
"For them to be 17 and 18 years old and to be here is pretty impressive," San Jose Giants manager Ydwin Villegas said.

Luis Hernandez is NOT a Runner-Up
Gonzales was already established as the best prospect in the organization by the time Hernandez was signed. With future franchise player Bryce Eldridge being promoted permanently to the big club's roster, the multi-talented sensation catapulted to the top of the club's rankings.
However, Gonzales isn't the bridesmaid of the two. Just as talented as his older teammate, Hernandez might possess the most talent of any athlete in the organization. He could be the ultimate pick to be turning two for 'Frisco in the future.
"Playing against veteran players gave me a lot of confidence," Hernandez stated when asked what he has learned so far in his brief time with San Jose. "I learned the game there, came (to the Giants) with more confidence, and now feel like I can adjust and do things because of that experience. It slowed everything down for me."

One member of the duo will likely assume the role as the cornerstone, everyday shortstop in San Francisco , with the other likely playing another position. Gonzalez looks suited for a move to third base, but potential injuries, inconsistencies, and even trades could occur if the team calls an audible on their advancement. Alongside their contemporaries, no matter who comes out on top, both players represent the next generation of Giants baseball.
