New York Giants left guard Jon Runyan Jr. is stoked to be playing for a Harbaugh again. He played his college ball under Jim at Michigan and now will play for his brother, John, here with the Giants.
"Everywhere the Harbaughs go, they are winning. Plain and simple," Runyan told the New York Post . "It's exciting. That's exactly what we need in New York right now."
John Harbaugh was hired as the Giants' 21st head coach last week after being let go by the Baltimore Ravens after 18 seasons. Runyan expects John to run a tight ship just like Jim did at Michigan.
"Ever since he got let go, I had the feeling that he was the perfect candidate for the Giants," Runyan said. "He's not going to take any B.S. from anybody. You're going to do it his way, and his way has worked for a lot of years with proven results.
"He made it pretty clear that the route he's going to go is you fall in line and get with it or you're probably not going to be around here. I don't think anybody enjoys winning three or four games every year."
The Harbaugh way derives from John and Jim's dad, Jack, who was a longtime college coach and mentor.
"Pretty much everything John said correlated to football sounded exactly like Jim, and it comes from Jack, so you can see how much of an influence their dad has," said Runyan, whose own father was a Pro Bowl left tackle for the Eagles. "They are both the same person on the field -- fiery, passionate competitors. Their 'enthusiasm unknown to mankind' shows up in how they go about day-to-day operations. Standing back there, listening to him and his mannerisms, gave me flashbacks."
That is why Runyan was one of the players in attendance when the Giants held a press conference to introduce John Harbaugh as their new head coach last week.
"I wanted to be there to see everybody for the first time in two weeks, and because I had somewhat of a relationship with the Harbaugh family," Runyan said. "Hopefully, it goes down in history as a big day. This was an important hire for the Giants, and to be there for Day 1 felt like a pretty cool experience. A lot of buzz, a lot of energy, a lot of hype -- and that's what this organization needs right now."
Yes. Yes, it does. And the discipline certainly won't hurt, either.
