Giants likely to shop Kayvon Thibodeaux this offseason, per report
Since being drafted fifth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux hasn't quite lived up to the hype expected of him after dominating in three seasons with the Oregon Ducks .
During his time in Eugene, Thibodeaux racked up 122 tackles, 19 sacks, three forced fumbles and seven pass deflections, routinely being mentioned among the top pass rushers in the nation. It all led to the New York Giants selecting him at No. 5 in 2022.
The former Duck had a solid start to his career, totaling four sacks and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team. He exploded in Year 2, amassing 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, using his hulking 6-foot-5, 258-pound frame to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. But his production has dipped over the past two seasons as he's dealt with reoccurring injuries, with Thibodeaux finishing with just eight sacks in 2024 and 2025 combined.
With fellow edge rushers Abdul Carter and Brian Burns already on the roster and producing at a higher rate than Thibodeaux, ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that Thibodeaux is more likely to be put in trade talks than extended upon his fifth-year team option, which is set to owe him $14.8 million in 2026.
The Giants traded for Burns from the Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2024 season likely with the vision of pairing him with Thibodeaux. But with the former's inability to stay on the field, New York selected Penn State edge rusher Carter in 2025 with the No. 3 pick. He was solid as a rookie, racking up four sacks but getting more pressure on the quarterback than his stats would suggest.
With only two edge rushing positions on the field at one time and three talented edge rushers on the roster, it appears that Thibodeaux is the odd man out.
Thanks to his 11.5-sack second season, there should be a market for the former Duck with the belief that a new situation could coax Pro Bowl-caliber play out of him once again. There's still a lot of offseason left, so this is certainly something to monitor as the draft nears.
