Manager Tony Vitello's first year with the San Francisco Giants has been one both he and the franchise hope to forget. Things have now gotten even worse after San Francisco 's latest injury update.
Left-hander Carson Whisenhunt has been diagnosed with a torn UCL and surgery has been recommended, via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. He was removed from his most recent start against the Cincinnati Reds . Now, the Giants' worst fears have materialized.
With Whisenhunt picking up the injury so late in the season, his status for the 2027 campaign is now in question. The Giants will have a better timetable once the surgery actually happens and rehab begins. But at the very least, Whisenhunt won't be expected to make an impact for the foreseeable future.

The left-hander had struggled through his first eight starts in 2026, holding a 6.49 ERA and a 26/21 K/BB ratio. But things looked better at the Triple-A level with a 4.15 ERA and a 90/38 K/BB ratio. He has recorded a 4.18 ERA and 423/153 through 85 minor league games and a 5.90 ERA and a 42/33 K/BB ratio over 13 major league games.
Clearly, Whisenhunt still has some things to work out at the major league level. But he is still just 25-years-old. He ranked as the Giants' second-best prospect in 2025, via MLB Pipeline. San Francisco still has high hopes for the lefty.
But now his development has hit a significant speed bump. While a timeline hasn't been confirmed, Whisenhunt will now be sidelined for a substantial amount of time. The Giants can only hope he comes out stronger once the entire ordeal is over.
