The San Francisco Giants received an encouraging update on Willy Adames after recurring back discomfort forced the shortstop from Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Houston Astros at Oracle Park.

The 30-year-old infielder aggravated his back while attempting to turn a double play in the seventh inning. He remained in the game long enough to bat in the bottom half before departing, raising concern that the injury could require an extended absence.
The issue is not new. Adames exited a June 28 game vs. the Atlanta Braves with lower back spasms. He subsequently missed three games before returning.

Wednesday's setback carried added significance because Adames remains an integral part of the Giants' lineup. San Francisco signed the shortstop to a seven-year, $182 million contract before the 2025 season, the largest deal in franchise history.

In a Wednesday post on X, formerly Twitter, NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic provided the latest update from the Giants manager on the veteran infielder's recurring back issues.
" Tony Vitello said he doesn't think the back issues Willy Adames is dealing with will lead to an IL stint, but he'll likely sit on Friday to let it calm down a bit (Giants are off tomorrow)."
That plan would give Adames at least two days without game action. The Giants are off Thursday, and holding him out Friday would provide additional recovery time before a possible return later in the weekend.
The injury remains worth monitoring because of its recurring nature. However, Vitello's expectation that the veteran will avoid the injured list represents an encouraging outcome after he experienced visible discomfort Wednesday.

San Francisco has little reason to rush one of its most important long-term players during the season's final weeks. Additional rest would allow the club to manage the injury without immediately removing Adames from the active roster.
For now, the Giants appear to have avoided a prolonged absence. Adames may miss Friday's game, but the current plan points toward a brief interruption rather than an extended shutdown.
