Competition should always be welcomed at the quarterback position if a franchise has a clear idea of who the starting signal-caller will be.
On Monday, the New York Giants signed a 33-year-old former San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams quarterback to compete with the organization’s 2025 first-round pick, Jaxson Dart .
“The New York Giants have signed quarterback Brandon Allen ,” the franchise announced. “Allen, 6-foot-2 and 209 pounds, was originally a sixth-round selection (No. 201 overall) by Jacksonville in 2016.”
“He has appeared in 19 games with 10 starts in his career and has spent time with the Jaguars (2016-17), Rams (2017-19), Broncos (2019-20), Bengals (2020-23), 49ers (2023-25), and Titans (2025). He has completed 183 of 323 passes (56.7%) for 1,882 yards with 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions.”
Considering Allen has never entered a season as an organization’s No. 1 QB, it’s safe to assume things won’t be any different in 2026-27. Allen sat behind Blake Bortles and Chad Henne in Jacksonville, Jared Goff and Sean Mannion in Los Angeles , Joe Flacco in Denver , Joe Burrow in Cincinnati , Brock Burdy in San Francisco , and Cam Ward in Tennessee .
However, it’s nice for the Giants to know that if Dart becomes inactive for whatever reason during the upcoming campaign, they have an experienced signal-caller who can fill in for a brief period.
