The San Francisco Giants must strengthen more than the most prominent areas of their roster during the offseason.
Their needs extend to pitchers capable of handling unexpected innings , dependable infield coverage and bench players who can provide manager Tony Vitello with practical alternatives when injuries or performance issues force adjustments.
Antonio Senzatela could help address San Francisco's need for reliable bullpen depth. The Giants should closely follow the right-hander's market as the offseason develops.
How Senzatela fits with Giants
The Colorado Rockies traded Senzatela to the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2026 season, leaving Milwaukee responsible for deciding whether to exercise his $14 million team option. On Monday, they declined it, making him a free agent.
Senzatela spent several years working as a starter for Colorado before eventually transitioning to the bullpen. That change followed a forgettable 2025 season in which he recorded a 6.65 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in 130 innings over 30 appearances (23 starts).
The right-hander responded with solid work for the Rockies and Brewers in 2026. Senzatela went 11-5 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 73.1 innings over 57 appearances, recording four saves and 11 holds.
He also pitched 4.1 innings over four postseason appearances, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.
Senzatela's upside
Senzatela's background would give Vitello several ways to use him. He has extensive experience working through a lineup as a starter, but his move to relief showed that he can adjust to shorter assignments and an unpredictable schedule.
That versatility could become especially useful during stretches when the rotation is overworked or the bullpen has been heavily used.
The Giants would not need to commit him to one specific assignment. Senzatela could cover multiple innings after an abbreviated start, enter for a traditional middle-relief appearance or provide emergency rotation coverage when necessary.
That type of flexibility can prevent San Francisco from overusing its more specialized relievers.
His experience should also help him handle the uncertainty that comes with such a role. Moving between organizations and pitching assignments requires preparation, patience and a willingness to contribute without knowing exactly when an opportunity will arrive.
San Francisco would still need to acquire more dominant options for the late innings . However, adding Senzatela at a reasonable price could make the entire pitching staff easier to manage.
His ability to accept different responsibilities would provide Vitello with another dependable option throughout a long season.
