Giants' Tony Vitello drops 'bitter pill' admission after stunning loss to Rockies appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The San Francisco Giants are not going to save their season in one fell swoop. They have dug themselves into a massive hole and cannot just jump out after one series or two and restore hope to the franchise. But a three-game set against the Colorado Rockies affords them the chance to at least make some headway in their steep ascent toward the National League playoff picture. Though, even routine climbs go haywire for the Orange and Black.
The rope frayed in the eighth inning of this divisional battle, and then it completely snapped in the bottom of the ninth. Leading 4-1 and 6-3 in those frames, respectively, the Giants bullpen could not secure what should have been a surefire victory. Keaton Winn gave up a two-run home run to Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar , and then fellow right-handed relief pitcher Caleb Kilian did the same to end the game after already allowing the equalizing blast to Hunter Goodman .
Holding true to the theme of San Francisco 's 2026 campaign, in the blink of an eye, the club squashed any morsel of optimism it was inspiring. Logan Webb's return , which saw him allow one run and walk three batters in 4 1/3 innings, gets overshadowed by a crushing 8-6 walk-off loss. Tony Vitello was forced to go through a routine he knows all too well by this point.
"Last inning obviously is a bitter pill, unfortunately one that we've experienced before, but they're hitters all took good swings," the embattled first-year Giants manager told reporters postgame. "Good lineup, live park, playing in front of their home fans, and they executed."
Vitello's squad has now dropped four in a row and eight of its last 10. San Francisco (22-35) is staring up at every NL club except Colorado, and a weekend sweep for the home team would earn the Giants solitary confinement in the Senior Circuit cellar.
With a previously solid bullpen now echoing the rest of the franchise's problems, total despair is bound to pervade Oracle Park. Luckily, no one will have to experience that for a while. The Gigantes will play the second game of a 10-day road trip on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. ET in Coors Field.
