Ray Allen was one of the greatest shooters to ever play the game. In fact, if there were an alternate world where Steph Curry did not exist, he would perhaps have been crowned as the greatest shooter in the game or the best pure shooter in basketball.
But while Allen made a lot of noise in the NBA with his long bombs and clutch 3-pointers, he was a quiet, reserved guy off the court and was perceived as an introvert because of how he behaved. Former Celtics teammate Glen Davis even went so far as to call Ray a geek.
"He's a weird guy," said Davis. "I think he's a nerd type of…black nerd type of guy. He always was like, 'Oh, George Bush was at the White House today.' Like Ray, I don't care about the motherfu—r. That was Ray. He was always trying to play golf."
Ray was a quiet and private person
Allen grew up in a military household as his father, Walter Allen Sr., served in the Air Force as a metal technician. That explained why Ray had disciplined routines, meticulous preparation, and always worked the extra mile.
It was also the reason Ray-Ray had that prim, proper, and quiet demeanor, where he usually didn't speak unless someone was talking to him. It did not help that, being a private person, Allen did not often go out with his teammates and preferred to stay at home, or, as Big Baby said, play golf.
To some, that came off as obnoxious, aloof, and even arrogant. But to those who knew him well, that was just Ray, a quiet and private guy who consistently showed up for work and delivered on the basketball court when it mattered most.
TA said the Celtics had three universities back then
Allen's unique personality was also described by former Celtics defensive ace Tony Allen during an episode of the "Out the Mud" podcast last December.
According to T.A., the Celtics had three superstars who had very different personalities. Allen likened it to having three different universities on one team , and Ray was the quiet one.
"We had Ray Allen University. Ray Allen might take you golfing. Chill, relax, read a book. 'Hey man, take this book,'" Allen said . "You know, that's Ray Allen. You know what I'm saying? My boy Ray, man. Whole special side."
Allen's quiet personality led to a beef with Pierce and Garnett
Unfortunately, the silent side of Ray's personality caused a big beef between him and his Celtics teammates, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
Allen left the Celtics to sign with the Miami Heat in 2012, a purely professional move. However, because he wasn't good at communicating with his teammates, The Truth and KG felt that Ray-Ray turned his back on them and betrayed their brotherhood.
That led to a long period during which they did not speak to one another, with neither side willing to budge. After years of a cold war, they finally reconciled and were back on speaking terms.
