If there had been a poll before the start of the season about which club had the bleakest mood around it, Werder Bremen would probably have finished pretty high.
That impression only solidified last weekend. The North Germans were swept aside 4-1 by SC Freiburg without so much as a whimper. Serious injury concerns further dampened the green-and-white mood — especially with a strong RB Leipzig side waiting this weekend.
But anyone who had already written this game off beforehand had reckoned without Bremen's resilience. Against the Champions League representatives from Saxony, Werder made the perfect start and quickly took a 1-0 lead.
After a clever pass from Germany striker Niclas Füllkrug, it was Eren Dinkci who virtually made the Weserstadion explode. The huge weight that must have fallen from the fans' hearts was probably heard even 370 kilometers away in Leipzig...
It now even stands at 3-0. Niclas Füllkrug scored his first Bundesliga goal since returning to Werder (68'), before Marco Grüll added another (80').
