The Cleveland Guardians are gearing up for what should be a massive series with the Detroit Tigers this weekend.
Cleveland has been fighting for their playoff lives of late, but the team did drop a tough series to the Toronto Blue Jays recently. This matchup with Detroit could either push the Guardians even farther from a wild-card spot or give them some needed spark.

But ahead of the Tigers series, the team has announced a wave of roster moves.
Right-hander Carlos Hernández has been designated for assignment, while right-hander Colin Holderman was placed on the 15-day injured list.
In a corresponding move, the Guardians have activated right-hander Slade Cecconi from the injured list. The team has also recalled right-hander Austin Peterson from Triple-A Columbus.
Slade Cecconi Returns
Cecconi has made 23 appearances (21 starts) for the Guardians this season. Over this time, he owns a 5.07 ERA, throwing 110.0 innings.
The right-hander has been sidelined for almost a month with right arm fatigue. But he made two rehab outings, allowing two runs over 3.2 innings.

In all likelihood, he will be used as a relief pitcher down the stretch for the Guardians, giving the bullpen some needed depth.
Who is Austin Peterson?
Peterson has spent all year in Triple-A, making 21 appearances (19 starts). He has posted a 4.53 ERA over 95.0 innings, striking out 102 batters.
Whenever he gets put into a game with the Guardians, it will be his MLB debut.
Other Roster Moves
Hernández has made two appearances for the Guardians this season. He has a 6.00 ERA over three innings pitched.
Losing Holderman hurts as he was in the midst of a breakout season for Cleveland. The right-hander has a 2.73 ERA over 54 appearances this year.

Holderman has been dealing with right wrist inflammation. He will be eligible for activation on Sept. 19.
Can the Guardians Make the Playoffs?
With only a few weeks left in the regular season, Cleveland doesn't have much time to lose. The upcoming series with Detroit seems to be a big one, especially with how tight the AL wild-card race is.
Following the Tigers series, the Guardians will head out on the road to face the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins. This road trip could make-or-break the chances for the postseason, depending on how Cleveland fares.
Cleveland is still in strong position, even with dropping the series to Toronto. But they will need to play clean baseball down the stretch, ensuring they at least give themselves a chance to get into the postseason bracket.
