For Cleveland Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio , the past week has been extremely difficult. Rocchio, who is from Venezuela, has seen his home country endure devastating earthquakes. A tragedy such as that surely makes baseball feel secondary. Yet, Rocchio, who is doing everything he can to help the country, continues to play baseball — and he's doing a tremendous job considering what he is dealing with. And speaking of doing a tremendous job, Rocchio came through with a clutch walk-off home run on Thursday to give Cleveland a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field.
Rocchio said the home run was for Venezuela while speaking to Guardians reporter Andre Knott in his postgame interview , via GuardsTV.
"I don't have words for right now, that's an unbelievable moment for me, more for my country," Rocchio said. "You know, what happened right now in Venezuela, I'm so happy to do that for every Venezuelan right now fighting to be safe."
Rocchio is going through an emotional time. He clearly wants to do his best to give his home country something to smile about during such a difficult time. He hit the walk-off home run for Venezuela, and he made the fans in Cleveland thrilled in the process as well. Rocchio has emerged as one of the best clutch hitters on the Guardians .
The Guardians and White Sox are now tied for first place in the American League Central standings. Chicago is technically in front due to percentage points, however. Cleveland can take sole possession of first place with another win on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
