After yesterday's postponement, the Cleveland Guardians finally hosted Game 4 of the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. And the home team drew first blood as Chase DeLauter delivered with an RBI single in the first inning.
DeLauter did his best Jake Bauers impression during the at-bat. Like the NLCS MVP, who had an epic 11-pitch at-bat against Blake Snell to deliver a crucial go-ahead home run in Game 3, DeLauter battled Nick Martinez in nine pitches before breaking through with the big hit.
As he announced, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt still elected to start reliever Shawn Armstrong for Game 4 despite the postponement. The 36-year-old Armstrong did what was asked of him and got a clean first inning. That proved to be his only participation of the game as Foster Griffin took over from the bullpen. But before that, DeLauter was able to hand Armstrong a lead with his dogged at-bat.
That at-bat is a bright spot in what has been an unspectacular postseason for DeLauter thus far. After leading the team in batting average (.287) and finishing second in home runs (16) and RBIs (67) during the regular season, the rookie has been fairly quiet in the playoffs. Prior to Game 4, he had just one home run and four RBIs in eight games.
But hopefully for the Guardians, DeLauter's gutsy Game 4 at-bat will be the spark he needs to get himself going in the series.
