Cleveland Guardians star Jose Ramirez previously underwent surgery after suffering a left hamate fracture. Ramirez is currently recovering from the injury . The third baseman suffered the injury in the middle of June and underwent surgery on June 16, and he was initially given a return timeline of around five-to-seven weeks. According to MLB.com, Ramirez is expected to return after the All-Star break.
MLB.com also reports that manager Stephen Vogt said Ramirez will likely miss around six weeks, which fits into the aforementioned five-to-seven week timeline. Ramirez had his stitches removed on Tuesday as well.
The 33-year-old was hitting .239/.339/.418 to go along with 10 home runs, 18 doubles and 24 stolen bases before landing on the injured list. While Ramirez was not playing up to his expectations, he was still leading a first place Guardians ball club. Cleveland has struggled since losing the star infielder to injury, though.
The Guards are now just 44-42 overall and in second place in the American League Central standings, where they trail the Chicago White Sox by two games. Cleveland's lineup has been the reason for the team's struggles for the most part, as the starting rotation has performed well. Without Ramirez, though, scoring runs has been especially challenging.
The Guardians are currently hoping to avoid getting swept by the Texas Rangers . The Rangers lead the three-game series 2-0 heading into Wednesday's contest. Cleveland will do everything it can to avoid getting swept at home.
First pitch for the ball game on Wednesday afternoon is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST at Progressive Field.
