The WNBA calendar has been filled with drama, some of which has been self-inflicted, other of which has been contrived by any handful of bad-faith actors.
We've gone through the mire to reach the ultimate — or penultimate — game of the 2026 WNBA season. It's only right that controversy isn't too far away from the surface.
The Dream are set to host the Valkyries on Thursday. Golden State has a chance to clinch its first-ever title should it win, although it might be easier from some parties if it didn't.
With that, here's a look at all the hubbub surrounding the venue and tip-off time for Game 6, a match being discussed for all the wrong reasons.

The league announced plans to hold Game 6 in State Farm Center, the site of Games 3 and 4. That decision came with a notable caveat; the game will be played at 12:30 p.m. ET, a stark contrast from the customary 8 p.m. ET tip-off time used throughout the series.
Organizers were caught between two worlds when trying to decide the venue and start time for Game 6. The match was initially scheduled to be played at Gateway Center, the Dream's home stadium, which holds just 3,500. The smaller capacity was seen as a suboptimal backdrop for a match of Game 6's magnitude by some observers, including Steve Kerr.
Officials scrambled for a solution, knowing that State Farm Center's primetime slot was booked on Thursday night: the Hawks will host the Cavaliers on the second day of a home-and-home back-to-back.
Ultimately, the league and teams landed on an unenviable resolution, agreeing to hold the game just after the rooster crows on Thursday afternoon. Golden State supporters will have to be up at 9:30 a.m. PT to witness their side vie for its first-ever WNBA title. With the contest taking place in the beginning or middle of the work and school day — depending on one's time zone — it's unlikely to garner quite as much interest as it would otherwise.
"I hope everybody gets to see it somehow," said Dream head coach Karl Smesko, per The Mercury News . "I know that for some people, it's not realistic. They have jobs and won't be able to make it, so I'm disappointed for that. But I'm really hopeful that as many people can see the game as possible."

The Hawks' evening game could pose additional problems should the Valkyries close out the series in Game 6. The trophy presentation is a celebratory — but arduous — process that is typically replete with pomp and circumstance. There is confetti. There are streamers. There's a stage.
All of that would be welcome sights in ideal circumstances. With State Farm Center set to host another event just hours after Thursday afternoon's game, though, the thought of a Golden State win could prove far more daunting.
Ostensibly, game-day officials will need to clear the court to switch up the decal and wax the floors ahead of the Hawks and Cavaliers' tilt. Per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, that could bring some complications — one of which would potentially see the Valkyries be presented their title on a practice floor.
So yeah, not ideal. Shelburne's report mentions the practice court as one possible remedy to the scheduling scandal. Perhaps the WNBA has other ideas under its sleeve. Either way, things look bound to be hectic on Thursday, especially if the Valkyries take Game 6.

On-site attendees aren't the only ones feeling the squeeze from the decision to move Game 6 to a 12:30 p.m. ET tip. Television viewers look poised to also be left in the lurch. The game will intersect with most people's work and school hours, making it all the more difficult to follow along with the matchup.
According to Nielsen, total TV audience at the 12 p.m. hour sits at 44.3 million this month, about 60 percent lower than the 106.2 million mark at 8 p.m., per Front Office Sports. The NBA experimented with starting its 2026-27 season with a matinee matchup between the Pistons and Celtics. Per Front Office Sports, that game drew 2.5 million viewers, much less than the 7.7 million who watched Knicks-Sixers at 7 p.m. ET and 4.8 million who tuned into Spurs-Thunder and 9:30 p.m.
This year's Finals is on pace to be the most-watched in league history, with the first three games of the series averaging about 1.7 million viewers. Support for the WNBA is undoubtedly at a high, although it would be folly to expect Game 6 to produce numbers anywhere close to that of its predecessors.
John Kosner, the head of Kosner Media and former ESPN executive, said as much. In an interview with Front Office Sports, Kosner said he expects there to be a "healthy" audience watching Thursday's game, although he doesn't expect the audience to be "equivalent of playing at 8 p.m. on a Thursday night."
The Hollywood Reporter's Alex Weprin reported that Game 6 will be unable to be simulcast on CNBC (as was the norm in the other games in the series) due to scheduling conflict. Instead, the game will have to be aired simultaneously on E! and Syfy, channels that project to garner lower viewership. The league will have it's work cut out for it if it hopes to mimic (or surpass) the viewership totals it produced in the opening five games.
