Hamburg fear captain Nicolai Remberg has suffered a serious ACL injury
Hamburg head coach Merlin Polzin has expressed serious concern over a potentially devastating injury to captain Nicolai Remberg following Saturday afternoon's dramatic 3-2 Bundesliga victory away at TSG Hoffenheim . The 25-year-old midfielder was forced off during the first half with a suspected cruciate ligament injury.
Remberg sustained the injury during a challenge with Hoffenheim's Bambasé Conté in the 35th minute. The HSV skipper initially attempted to continue after receiving treatment, but ultimately conceded defeat and was replaced by Miro Muheim in the 41st minute.

The former Holstein Kiel midfielder subsequently watched the second half from the bench with a substantial bandage around his right knee. Speaking to reporters after the match, Polzin offered a grim initial assessment.
"Things look absolutely terrible for 'Rambo'," Polzin explained to Sky Germanyafterwards. "There's a suspicion of a cruciate ligament injury."
The HSV trainer was visibly affected by the potential loss of his captain, revealing that Remberg had addressed his teammates in an emotional dressing-room speech after the final whistle.
"Rambo is our leader, the perfect example of what we want HSV to be," Polzin said. "The lads did it for him in the second half too. After the match, Rambo said a few words to the lads in the dressing room. That was very, very emotional."

A definitive medical diagnosis remains pending. Should the initial fears be confirmed, HSV could face the prospect of losing one of their most important players for an extended period.
Nicolai Remberg's importance to Hamburger SV
Remberg's potential absence would represent a considerable setback for a Hamburg side that has only recently begun to recover from a difficult start to the Bundesliga campaign. The Münster native joined HSV from relegated Holstein Kiel in summer 2025 after the club reportedly activated a €2.5m release clause. Remberg had previously helped Preußen Münster and Kiel achieve successive promotions through Germany's footballing pyramid.
His aggressive tackling, physical presence and versatility quickly established him as an indispensable component of Polzin's midfield. The qualities that earned him the nickname "Rambo" also helped him emerge as an influential voice within the squad.

His leadership role subsequently became even more prominent when Polzin appointed him captain ahead of the current season. Remberg's tactical importance was also a recurring theme in our comprehensive Hamburg preseason preview . The midfielder's ball-winning ability and positional flexibility remain central to Polzin's plans, particularly with a considerably reshuffled squad attempting to establish itself in the Bundesliga.
Hamburg fight back after Remberg injury to claim second consecutive victory
Saturday's victory in Sinsheim nevertheless provided evidence of Hamburg's growing resilience. The visitors made an encouraging start and took the lead in the 12th minute through Yussuf Poulsen, who reacted quickest after Nicolas Capaldo's effort rebounded off the post.
Remberg's departure coincided with a significant shift in momentum. Hoffenheim equalised through a Sebastiaan Bornauw own goal deep into first-half stoppage time before Conté completed the turnaround with his first Bundesliga goal in the 53rd minute.

The match changed again when Hoffenheim defender Bernardo received a second yellow card in the 65th minute. Hamburg capitalised on their numerical advantage, with substitute Terem Moffi heading home his first HSV goal following Muheim's cross in the 83rd minute.
Muheim, making his first appearance of the season after replacing Remberg, subsequently completed the remarkable comeback with a precise left-footed finish in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Having finally claimed their first Bundesliga victory of the season against Köln before the international break , Polzin's side have now recorded consecutive wins and secured their first away points of the campaign.
The coach must nevertheless begin considering alternatives to his injured captain.
