The New York Mets are in the middle of a brutal nine-game losing streak in the early goings of the 2026 MLB season, and that's not all the bad news for the Mets.

While Juan Soto is recovering from a calf injury, the Mets just lost another player. This time, Jorge Polanco is landing on the injured list with a problem of his own.

But why is Polanco landing on the IL? According to the Mets' announcement , Polanco is dealing with a right wrist issue, which is different than the Achilles problem that initially caused him to miss some time.

Mets placed Jorge Polanco on IL with wrist issue

"INF Jorge Polanco was placed on the 10-Day injured list, retroactive to April 15, with a right wrist contusion," the Mets announced. "C Hayden Senger has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse."

Losing Polanco to the injured list was not a major surprise. He had been dealing with an Achilles issue before this wrist issue popped up on Friday, and this new problem made his likelihood of hitting the injured list all the more great.

He's struggled a ton so far this season, hitting just .179 with a .532 OPS on the year through 56 at-bats. Now, he's landing on the injured list and will miss some time.

Taking Polanco's place on the MLB roster is Hayden Senger, a 29-year-old catcher who has a .181 batting average and .415 OPS in his 72 career big-league at-bats.

While not that appealing, Senger is hitting .247 with a 1.030 OPS in the minor leagues this season, so he could be a more productive hitter this year than he was before.

The Mets are placing Polanco on the injured list due to a wrist issue, as the $40 million infielder is set to miss some time this season.

Things aren't getting any better for the Mets, who are in the middle of a nine-game losing streak, and are now losing expensive players to the injured list in just the first few weeks of the 2026 MLB season.
