Hard Knocks spotlights KaVontae Turpin’s impact beyond stats
Episode 4 of Hard Knocks: In Season with the NFC East premieres Tuesday night, and according to Ken Rodgers, it will shine a light on an unexpected Cowboys storyline centered on KaVontae Turpin . In an exclusive interview , the Vice President and Executive Director of NFL Films explained that this week’s episode moves beyond wins, losses, and box scores to focus on something harder to quantify.
“We really see this week what the Cowboys are all about. This week's episode really dives into KaVontae Turpin,” Rodgers explained, “And Turpin is sort of a perfect example of the type of character that exists outside of wins and losses, an underdog who helps bond the team together.
“Part of that glue that keeps people in brotherhood, in sync with each other, outside of whether they're in sync on a given play, is that they as a group like each other, and Turpin is a big part of that.”
For many Cowboys fans, that framing might come as a surprise.
Most conversations around Turpin this season have focused on decline , not leadership. In 2024, he was one of the most explosive returners in football. This year, the production has fallen off sharply. His kick return average dropped from 33.5 yards, second in the NFL, to 26.0 yards, which sits below the 2025 league average. His punt return average also slipped from 10.4 yards to 5.5 yards. After scoring two return touchdowns last season, one on a kick and one on a punt, he has none this year.
Those numbers reflect more than just individual struggles. The Cowboys’ special teams unit has battled blocking issues all season, contributing to starting field position that ranks near the bottom of the league. Turpin himself has also dealt with ball security issues and penalties, further muddying the picture.
Offensively, his role has continued to shrink. Used primarily as a gadget player, Turpin has not recorded a game with more than 30 receiving yards since Week 3 and has totaled 310 receiving yards through 13 games in 2025. With the return of CeeDee Lamb and other contributors, Turpin has slid further down the depth chart as the season progressed.
That is why NFL Films’ portrayal stands out. For many fans, this episode may be the first time Turpin is presented less as a struggling returner and more as a connective piece inside the locker room. Whether or not fans agree, it offers new context about how the Dallas Cowboys see themselves internally.
Rodgers says these kinds of reframes are common in his documentaries .
“I think every player has levels to them like onions. And what we talk about here at NFL Films a lot is let's take off a portion of the onion…”Rodgers said, “I don't think, honestly, anyone really knows the full scope of any player in the National Football League because they are complicated, just like all of us are complicated.”
Even with unparalleled access, Rodgers acknowledged that NFL Films never tells the whole story. What they provide is one perspective, not a definitive verdict on a player or a season.
“It's human nature to have a lot of contradictions, a lot of viewpoints on you, and the fans might have one, and Hard Knocks might have another. I would bet that all of his teammates have different viewpoints on him, and he probably has a different viewpoint on everyone else. I would say I don't think fans are getting the full story of anyone.”
