San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has become the NBA's next unicorn, celebrated around the world for his fierce competitive drive, relentless work ethic and refreshingly candid personality. All these attributes have been on the league's biggest stage as he continues to lead his team against the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals.
However, as always, greatness often means having a target painted on one's back; with the admirers come the haters and Wemby has certainly earned his fair share of both. Recently, The Ringer's David Jacoby jumped on the hater bandwagon and didn't blink an eye in expressing his utmost disdain for the 7'4" Frenchman during his appearance on "The Zach Lowe Show."
Wemby mushed Jalen Brunson
According to Jacoby, a veteran broadcaster who worked at ESPN before moving to The Ringer, his hatred for Wembanyama began when Wembanyama elbowed Minnesota Timberwolves big man Naz Reid in the second round of the playoffs and wasn't suspended.
Apparently, Wemby's throwdown of Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson was the straw that broke the camel's back for Jacoby.
"My blood is still a little bit boiling about this Brunson thing because I've seen it a million times. Like, what is he responding to? What is that a retaliation for? Look, I think he emotionally can't control himself, honestly," Jacoby said . "And I really started drumming up a dislike for him this summer, and now it's just at a million."
"Look, I cannot stand this guy. I hate his outfits. I hate his face. I hate his hair. I hate everything about him. I just think he's such a try-hard, curated…" Jacoby declared.
It's difficult to ascertain where all the hate is coming from. After all, physicality is to be expected in the postseason, and most especially in the NBA Finals, when the last two teams standing have a 50-50 chance of winning it all. However, Jacoby's hatred for the Spurs' superstar seems to go beyond what he's able to do on the floor.
Jacoby can't stand Wembanyama
Wemby isn't an ordinary run-of-the-mill NBA superstar. He's disciplined, trains religiously, goes to sleep at 9 p.m. and does things that other athletes don't normally do, like hang out at Central Park and draw.
However, even this didn't go well with Jacoby.
"When he goes to the park and he's drawing in the park with his friend, he's sketching a bush with a graphite pencil. I just can't stand it," he proclaimed.
"I respect him as a basketball player, and I respect the work ethic. I'm not saying he's a bad basketball player. You can't disagree with me when I say I can't f—cking stand Victor Wembanyama . You cannot disagree with me. That's my opinion," he added.
Yes, Jacoby is certainly entitled to his opinions and feelings about the 22-year-old. At the same time, his opinion is baffling given how Wembanyama has helped not only raise the Spurs' ceiling but also the rest of the NBA's. He's a transcendent talent who can do everything on the basketball floor and maybe even one day become the sport's "GOAT (Greatest of All Time)."
