The Atlanta Hawks finished their preseason with a 135-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks on October 16, 2026. The real story isn't the score, but how head coach Quin Snyder used three new defenders. According to Soaring Down South , Snyder did not play Luguentz Dort, Dyson Daniels, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker together for long stretches. Instead, he staggered their minutes to keep fresh legs on the court.
This approach lets the team stay strong on defense without burning out its best players. The Hawks now have a plan to use these three men in different pairs during the game. They can also save the full trio for when the game gets tight and they need a stop. This strategy looks like the key to their upcoming season.

Staggering Minutes Keeps Defenders Fresh
Quin Snyder has a tricky job with three excellent defenders. All three can pressure ball handlers and disrupt offensive plays. But playing them all at once might hurt the team's offense. Soaring Down South notes that Snyder used different combinations like Daniels with Dort, Dort with Alexander-Walker, and Daniels with Alexander-Walker. This mix allows the coach to surround the defenders with better shooters.
Aaron Wiggins showed why depth matters in that same game against Dallas. He played 22 minutes off the bench and scored 19 points with seven rebounds. He also hit four three-point shots. His performance proves the Hawks have reliable options when starters need rest. Wiggins was the third-leading scorer on the night, filling a gap the team had last year.
By rotating these players, Snyder avoids using up their energy too early. The goal is to keep defensive intensity high from the first tip-off to the final buzzer. This method also helps balance the offense, as Alexander-Walker provides steady shooting while Dort can hit open shots. It is a smart way to build a team that can do both.

Saving the Trio for Crucial Moments
Even though they are playing apart most of the time, fans should expect to see all three together late in games. Soaring Down South suggests that the combination of Daniels, Dort, and Alexander-Walker could be deadly in closing minutes. Their ability to switch assignments and disrupt passing lanes makes scoring very hard for the other team.
This flexibility will be vital against strong opponents in the regular season. The Hawks face a tough start with games against Orlando, Houston, Miami, and Cleveland. Two of those games against Houston will happen within three days. Snyder can use these early challenges to see which lineups work best. The preseason was just a test run for the real work ahead.
The team needs to prove their new pieces fit together well against top talent. Having a plan to mix and match defenders gives Snyder more tools to win. If one player rests, another steps in to keep the pressure up. This depth was missing last season and could be the difference in the playoffs.

The Hawks spent the whole offseason trying to fix their defense and add depth. Last year, they had trouble finding reliable forwards off the bench. Jonathan Kuminga was a good stopgap, but they needed more. Aaron Wiggins, who is 27 years old, brings the consistency they were missing. He forces bad shots on defense and makes teams pay on offense.
With Wiggins, Dort, Daniels, and Alexander-Walker, the Hawks finally have a strong defensive core. They can switch on almost anyone and stay physical. The preseason win over Dallas showed that these new additions can handle real game speed. It was not just a fluke; the team played like it was a regular-season game.
As the regular season starts on October 21, the pressure will be on to make this work. The early schedule is brutal, but it will show if the plan holds up. Snyder has the right pieces, and now he has a clear way to use them. The fans in Atlanta have reason to be excited about what comes next.
