Alabama A&M star quarterback Cornelius Brown IV has been cleared to play his 8th season of college football. Brown’s college career has been plagued by injuries, which allowed him to secure an exemption for his eighth year.

He started his college career at Georgia State in 2019, putting up impressive totals of 2,489 passing yards and 26 total touchdowns (17 passing and 9 rushing). He was a standout in the Sun Belt and was named the MVP of the 2020 LendingTree Bowl.

After spending about three seasons at Georgia State, dealing with injuries that kept him on and off the field, he transferred to UT Martin, aiding the team in a run to the OVC championship. He then elected to transfer to Alabama A&M, and he was a key feature of Sam Shade’s offensive attack to start the season.

However, he suffered an ankle sprain four games into the season. In a statement posted to his social media accounts, he considered the injury a result of an illegal low blow and stated he would classify himself as a medical redshirt as he rehabbed.

“Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter of the Jackson State game, I suffered an illegal low hit in the pocket that led to three torn ligaments in my ankle, which put me out for the remainder of the season. I underwent surgery and have intentions of obtaining a medical redshirt and returning to The Hill to finish what I started. Thank you for the unwavering support, but for now the job is #ToBeCon10ued #DaChase”

Alabama A&M enjoyed an explosive offensive attack with Brown under center and found themselves at 2-2 on the year. Before his injury, he threw for 1,060 yards and 7 touchdowns, including a 229-yard, 2-touchdown game against Tennessee State on September 13.
