Darnell Washington has become a real asset for the Steelers, and his new contract reflects that. The tight end signed a four-year, $42 million deal with $21 million guaranteed, rewarding both his blocking skills and growing presence in the passing game.
Washington's extension came just a day after the team handed Nick Herbig a four-year, $100 million deal, as Pittsburgh continues to lock up its young core.
With Joey Porter Jr. and Broderick Jones also up for new deals soon, it's clear the front office is keen to keep this group together.

Washington's $10.5 million salary puts him near the top tier for tight ends and highest among blocking-first players at his position. For comparison, Charlie Kolar 's deal with the Chargers pays out $8.1 million a year, but Washington has shown more than just blocking ability in recent seasons.
Standing at 6-foot-7 and nearly 300 pounds, he set career bests in 2025 with 31 receptions for 364 yards and a touchdown before a broken arm ended his season in Week 17. He had started to build good chemistry with Aaron Rodgers before then.
Standing at 6'7 and weighing 265 pounds, Washington gives Pittsburgh a tight end who can function like an extra lineman without sacrificing anything in the passing game. He's here every day, in the classroom, learning and working hard. He's a true professional."
Pat Freiermuth is entering the final year of his four-year, $48 million extension signed back in 2024. With Washington's new deal, it's clear who's at the top of the depth chart. While Washington looks set for a bigger role, questions about Freiermuth's next contract still linger.
Rodgers, who led Pittsburgh to an AFC North title last season with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions, now has a refreshed receiving group featuring Michael Pittman Jr. (acquired from the Colts), DK Metcalf (traded for the previous offseason), and rookie Germie Bernard .
Washington's extension highlights the team's focus on structure beneath the surface talent. The Steelers are investing in personnel flexibility, run-game advantages, and protection solutions, built around a tight end who also proved last year that he can catch.
