- Highlands drops RMAC game on road to South Dakota Mines
Gage Baker passed for 287 yards and three touchdowns, leading South Dakota Mines to a 34-23 win over visiting New Mexico Highlands on Saturday in Rapid City, S.D.
The Hardrockers' quarterback threw for two scores in the third quarter as Mines rattled off 21 unanswered points to break open what had been a 13-13 tie in the first half.
Highlands was limited to just 79 yards rushing, leaving much of the offense to quarterbacks Kadyn Parr and Collin Stucki. Parr started and had 189 yards passing with two touchdowns, but Stucki replaced him in the third quarter and led a pair of scoring drives after Mines opened a 34-13 lead.
Stucki had a scoring run called back on a holding call, then threw two interceptions and finished with 79 yards passing and a team-high 25 on the ground.
Parr started NMHU on the right foot, leading a scoring drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Releford midway through the first quarter to open a 7-0 lead. Parr then had a 65-yard touchdown heave to Brian Spotwood in the second quarter to tie the game.
The loss drops Highlands to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines (4-1, 2-1) remains in the league race, which has it tied for third, one game behind nationally ranked Colorado State-Pueblo (5-0, 3-0).
Highlands hosts nationally ranked Western Colorado next week in Las Vegas, then gets a bye before visiting CSU-Pueblo in mid-October.
