Former MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer has been absent from the league since 2021, when he made his final appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Francisco Giants . In the meantime, he has continued his baseball career in other countries.
On Monday, Bauer said he had signed with Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Professional Baseball League for the 2026-27 winter season. This will be his first time playing winter baseball in the Dominican Republic.
Fans reacted to Bauer's career update.
"God I hope they make him look silly."
Here are more fan reactions:
The league suspended Bauer for 324 games in 2022, which an arbitrator later reduced to 194. The Dodgers released Bauer in January 2023. He is free to return to MLB, but teams appear to be uninterested in signing him. As a result, Bauer has been playing in baseball leagues around the world, including NPB and the Mexican League.
Trevor Bauer is off to explore another baseball-loving country.
The 2020 NL Cy Young winner said he appreciates the passion for baseball in the Dominican Republic, and his deal with Estrellas Orientales will allow him to witness the country's love for the sport. Bauer said he has been in touch with Estrellas' front office since 2024.
"I've decided to go play in the Dominican Republic. Dominican is so passionate about baseball; it's such a huge part of baseball culture, and I have never been there," Bauer said in his video. "I just can't imagine my baseball career without having gone down to the Dominican and seen it and played there. It looks so fun."
Bauer hopes to play in the Caribbean Series eventually. However, for that, his team will first need to qualify by winning the LIDOM championship.
Bauer began this year with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League before moving back to Mexico and joining Diablos Rojos del México. With Long Island, Bauer posted a 2.36 ERA with 66 strikeouts and seven walks in 42 innings across seven starts.
