The Charlotte Hornets had been busy before the start of training camp, trading Dorian Finney-Smith to the Atlanta Hawks for Buddy Hield and Ryan Nembhard . They then traded Hield to the Chicago Bulls for Rob Dillingham , but it looks like they didn't plan on keeping the guard going into the season after just waiving him , according to the team's PR.
"OFFICIAL: Hornets have waived guard Rob Dillingham ," Hornets PR wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
It's been a rough journey for Dillingham in just his third season in the league. He was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2024 with the No. 8 pick, but barely was able to make an impact in his rookie season. There was hope that he would get more of an opportunity last season, but things still didn't pan out the way that many expected.

That's when the Timberwolves moved him at the deadline, trading him to a young Bulls team where he could possibly see more playing time. He was able to do that, averaging 21.5 minutes and 9.6 points per game.
It was uncertain if he would've seen consistent minutes with the Hornets, especially with all the moves they've made over the offseason. They already have Dennis Schroder and Coby White as their guards , so he would've at best been the third point guard on the depth chart.
With Dillingham on waivers, it'll be interesting to see if a team decides to take a chance on him. There's no doubt that he can play, but at this point, he just needs the opportunity.
