Hubert Davis out as head coach at North Carolina

The search is on for a new men's basketball coach at the University of North Carolina.
After days of speculation following North Carolina's loss to VCU in the NCAA Tournament, coach Hubert Davis is out. The firing comes following Davis' fifth season after taking over for Roy Williams. UNC went 24-9 overall and finished fourth in the ACC regular season standings in the 2025-26 season.
Though the initial report did not specify the nature of Davis' departure, the coach posted to Instagram that he had been let go and had wanted to continue as coach.
However, UNC lost three straight games to end the season and was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
Going into the NCAA Tournament, there was a feeling around the program that Davis could be on the hot seat with an early exit. UNC jumped to a big lead over VCU, but blew a 19-point lead and watched as the Rams advanced.
Following that collapse came days of speculation and multiple meetings involving university decision makers, including Davis. In the end, the program faces its first true coaching search in years.
Davis took over for Roy Williams in 2021. He took North Carolina to the national championship game in his first season, including beating Duke in the Final Four. Since then, UNC has missed the tournament once, has been eliminated in the first round twice and reached the Sweet 16 once.
He finishes his stint as the UNC coach with a 125-54 record (68-30 ACC).
The UNC job will be the best in the country available and the program will look for an experienced coach to take over the reins.
