Hull City 2-0 Manchester United was one of the biggest shocks of the Premier League's opening weekend.
The newly promoted Hull City Tigers stunned United at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored in the first half to secure Hull City's first-ever league win over United. It's also the first time Hull City has beaten United in a league match in 52 years.
One defeat on the road to a promoted side isn't a crisis on its own. Plenty of strong seasons have started with an upset.
Michael Carrick is now in permanent charge after United finished last season strongly. He still has two clear problems to solve before his side's next Premier League game against Ipswich Town.
Hull City started the brighter of the two sides and made it count inside the opening 20 minutes. Ajayi forced home the opener in the 17th minute after United failed to clear a corner, and Mendy doubled the lead soon after, converting from a free kick played to the back post.

United enjoyed the majority of possession for the remainder of the half but couldn't find a way back into the game before the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern. United pushed men forward and camped in Hull City's half for long spells, forcing a double substitution just after the hour mark as Carrick looked for more of a goal threat.
Hull City, content to defend deep and manage the game, saw out the closing stages comfortably. It called on goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis late into action to preserve the clean sheet. The final whistle confirmed a first-ever Premier League win for Hull City over United, and a losing start to the season for the visitors.
Both Hull City goals came from dead-ball situations. Ajayi poked home from close range after United failed to deal with a corner, and Mendy finished off a free kick delivered to the back post. Hull City's set-piece specialist Regan Slater was directly involved in creating both goals, and United's marking and defensive organization were not good enough on either occasion.
Bruno Fernandes was direct about it afterward, acknowledging that United needed to match Hull City's intensity and deal far better with set pieces. That's a fixable problem in theory, but it's also a collective one. Carlos Baleba is reportedly set to join the midfield this summer, and more defensive-minded reinforcement in one area doesn't automatically solve poor marking elsewhere on the pitch. United can afford an off day in attack. They can't keep gifting promoted sides two set-piece goals and expect to compete at the top of the table.

United had the better of possession against Hull City, finishing with 65% of the ball to Hull City's 35%. The United dominance never translated into real danger. According to Opta's post-match data, United managed just 0.30 expected goals from four shots, while Hull City posted a higher 0.78 xG from only three shots on target. This is a damning number for an United team that controlled the game for long stretches.
Part of the issue is profile. United's squad is built heavily around players who thrive in transition and space, rather than unlocking a well-organized, deep-sitting defense. This is exactly the kind of game state Hull City set up for once they went 2-0 ahead.
Carrick's response told its own story. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were two of United's summer midfield additions. They were both withdrawn together in the 66th minute for Benjamin Šeško and Kobbie Mainoo, a double change aimed squarely at manufacturing more of a goal threat.
United did earn late corners and force two saves from Tzolakis, but by then the game was already gone. The problem wasn't simply that United didn't score. It's that they didn't consistently create the kind of situations from which a goal was likely to come.

Carrick doesn't need to panic after one defeat. He said as much himself afterward, telling reporters the result "won't change our direction." He does need answers, though.
United conceded twice from set pieces and posted a lower expected-goals total than a promoted side despite nearly two-thirds of the possession. Both problems were visible for 90 minutes rather than the product of one unlucky moment. If they're still showing up next time United play a Premier League game, an opening-day upset will start to look like something more serious.
