Hurricanes confirm the worst for captain Jordan Staal
The Carolina Hurricanes have suffered a major blow early in the 2026-27 NHL season, as captain Jordan Staal is expected to miss the next one to two months with a torn calf muscle.
Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour confirmed the severity of Staal's injury to reporters today, revealing that the veteran forward suffered the injury during Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. While Carolina managed to secure the win, the loss of its captain is going to be felt throughout the organization, particularly given the importance of Staal to the team's success over the past year.
Staal is coming off a remarkable 2025-26 campaign in which he helped lead the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup championship and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Losing a player of that calibre for potentially two months is never ideal, but the timing is especially unfortunate for a Carolina team hoping to build on its championship success and establish itself as a contender once again.

At 37 years old, Staal remains one of the most important pieces of the Hurricanes' lineup. His offensive contributions are valuable, but his real impact goes well beyond the scoresheet. He is a trusted defensive forward, a reliable faceoff man, a physical presence and one of the team's most important leaders in the dressing room.
Those qualities were on full display during Carolina's Stanley Cup run last season. Staal was instrumental in the Hurricanes' ability to shut down opposing teams' top offensive players, while his experience and composure helped the club navigate the pressure of the postseason. Winning the Conn Smythe Trophy was a fitting recognition of just how much he contributed to Carolina's championship effort.
His importance hasn't diminished with the start of the new season, either. Staal's ability to handle difficult defensive assignments allows Brind'Amour to deploy his other forwards in more favourable situations. He also provides stability down the middle, helping Carolina control possession, win critical draws and protect leads late in games.
Replacing that combination of skills won't be easy.

Carolina does have some options down the middle, although none can replicate everything Staal brings to the table. Sebastian Aho remains the team's offensive engine, while Logan Stankoven has emerged as an exciting young contributor who could be asked to shoulder additional responsibility. Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Mark Jankowski are also candidates to take on larger roles while Staal recovers.
Brind'Amour could also experiment with his forward combinations, shifting players between lines to find the right balance of scoring and defensive reliability. The Hurricanes have enough offensive talent to remain dangerous, but finding someone who can consistently handle Staal's difficult defensive assignments will be a different challenge altogether.
There is at least some reason for optimism. Carolina demonstrated its depth during Saturday's win over Chicago, with all four forward lines finding the back of the net. The Hurricanes also defeated Philadelphia 4-1 on Sunday, extending their winning streak to five games despite being without their captain.
Still, surviving a game or two without Staal is one thing. Managing the next four to eight weeks without him is an entirely different proposition. The Hurricanes will need contributions from their supporting cast, particularly when facing the league's strongest teams and their most dangerous offensive players.

Staal's absence will also put additional pressure on Carolina's leadership group. As captain, he has been a central figure in establishing the team's identity under Brind'Amour. His physical style, work ethic and willingness to take on the toughest assignments have helped set the standard for the rest of the roster.
Fortunately for Carolina, Staal's injury comes early enough in the season that there should be plenty of time for him to recover before the stretch run and, potentially, another Stanley Cup playoff push. The priority now will be ensuring that he returns healthy rather than rushing him back prematurely.
The Hurricanes have championship aspirations, and they have the roster to remain competitive while their captain recovers. But make no mistake: losing the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner for one to two months is a significant setback.
Carolina's ability to navigate this stretch without Staal could ultimately tell us a great deal about whether this team has what it takes to defend its Stanley Cup title.
