Hurricanes star receiver Malachi Toney honored at Heat game
Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney got the star treatment during the Heat’s rout of the Bulls on Sunday night.
The UM rising sophomore was honored on the court during a break in play. He was presented with a personalized Heat jersey during the announcement.
The honor came about two weeks after Toney and the Hurricanes played in the program’s first national title game since the 2002 season, losing to Indiana in the championship game.
Toney was a major reason why the Hurricanes reached the title game. The former American Heritage star had a breakout season, setting UM single-season records in receptions (109) and receiving yards (1,211) and notching 13 total touchdowns. The freshman star had 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the championship game.
Toney earned numerous honors for his strong season. He was the ACC Rookie of the Year and an All-ACC first-team pick. He was named a second-team AP All-American and a FWAA Freshman All-American.
Toney is set to return to Miami for his sophomore season in 2026 , starring in an offense led by new quarterback Darian Mensah.
Former UM assistant promoted at FSU
Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is retiring, the program announced on Monday. Seminoles coach Mike Norvell is promoting former Miami assistant coach Tim Harris to be the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Harris previously worked as Norvell’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Harris, who ran track with the Hurricanes and is a member of the UM Sports Hall of Fame, was Miami’s running backs coach in 2023. Under Harris, UM rushed for 173.15 yards per game, which was 45th nationally.
Florida State went 5-7 last season and had the No. 22 offense in the nation.
