The Memphis Grizzlies are off to their best start since 2014, and their early success is about more than scoring. Through their first five games, Memphis has built an identity around effort, rebounding and contributions across the roster.
Their ability to control the glass and create extra possessions has played a major role in their undefeated start and has become part of this team's identity.
Memphis has made a significant jump in offensive rebounding. Last year, the Grizzlies finished 23rd in offensive rebounding percentage in 2025-26. This season , they are averaging 50.4 rebounds per game, ranking second in the NBA, while their 32.6% offensive rebounding percentage ranks third.
That improvement has helped Memphis create additional scoring opportunities through second-chance points and extra possessions. The Grizzlies have also been strong defensively, ranking sixth in defensive rating. Their ability to control the glass and limit opposing offenses has helped fuel their undefeated start
One of the biggest reasons for Memphis' success has been its contributions from players throughout the roster.
Cedric Coward has been a major part of the team's rebounding improvement. He currently leads all players 6-foot-6 or shorter in rebounds, averaging nine boards, showing that his impact goes beyond his scoring and perimeter defense.
Head coach Tuomas Iisalo deserves plenty of credit for Memphis' hot start. He has helped establish what kind of team the Grizzlies want to be and how they will play.
The team's effort, physicality and willingness to compete for every possession have become important parts of its identity. Memphis has shown that it can win games by doing the little things, including getting stops, fighting for rebounds and creating second-chance opportunities.
While rebounding and effort have helped establish Memphis' identity, the Grizzlies have also received big performances from their leading offensive players.
Cameron Boozer recorded his first career triple-double against Portland, helping the Grizzlies remain undefeated.
Ty Jerome has continued to run the offense, providing scoring and playmaking. Meanwhile, Coward has been an important perimeter threat, shooting 69% from three-point range to start the season.
If Memphis can keep getting production from multiple players, it will be much harder to defend.
The Grizzlies have put together one of the strongest starts in franchise history, but the challenge now is sustaining that success. The NBA is a long season, and sustaining that level of rebounding and defense will be a test as the season goes on.
Memphis could also look to add another wing to complement its defensive identity. One name to monitor is Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans. His situation could be worth watching as Memphis evaluates potential roster improvements.
The Grizzlies will close out October with a Halloween matchup against the Sacramento Kings. It will be another opportunity to show that their early-season success is built on more than a hot start.
