Iñigo Lekue announces his retirement at the end of the season
Iñigo Lekue will hang up his boots at the end of the current season. The full-back from Deusto has decided to bring his professional career to a close after eleven seasons defending the shirt of Athletic Club , the team of his life. The news comes after the sporting directors informed him that his contract will not be renewed.
Developed at Danok Bat before shining at Basconia and Bilbao Athletic, Lekue represents the essence of Lezama. His versatility and absolute commitment have allowed him to be a key player for all his coaches, always accepting his role with exemplary professionalism and unconditional love for the red-and-white colours.

With three matches remaining before the end of LaLiga, the Deusto native leaves behind a legacy of 281 official appearances. His honours list proudly features three unforgettable titles: the recent 2023/24 Copa del Rey and the two Spanish Super Cups won in the 2014/15 and 2019/20 seasons.
Athletic are losing one of their last "One Club Men", a type of footballer that is becoming increasingly hard to find in the modern game. Lekue departs with the respect of San Mamés, having embodied the values of hard work and loyalty that define the Biscayan club.
