One of the biggest storylines set to dominate the NBA in the next couple of days is the future of two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo . With the Milwaukee Bucks slipping out of the Play-In picture in the Eastern Conference, the roster is increasingly made up of players who either need time to develop or are simply not equipped to contend for a championship, and the writing appears to be on the wall. All signs point toward the Greek Freak preparing for a new chapter elsewhere.
While the likes of the Miami Heat and New York Knicks are deemed favorites to land, if Dillon Brooks is to be believed, it is the Golden State Warriors where Giannis is likely heading - a sight he admitted would terrify the rest of the NBA.
Brooks says Steph and Giannis will be a tough tandem to stop
From a financial standpoint, such a blockbuster move would have its own complications. In today's rigid salary-cap era, the Warriors cannot afford Giannis' massive contract without significantly reshaping their roster. As a result, the Dus would likely require giving up on key young assets like Brandin Porziemski, Jonathan Kuminga , as well as potential first-round picks through 2026, 2028, 2030 and 2032.
Additionally, for Brooks, if the Warriors are to pursue Antetokounmpo, then Jimmy Butler , who has recently injured his ACL at the age of 36, is certain to be on his way out.
However, what truly excites and alarms Brooks, though, is the on-court fit. The idea of Stephen Curry and Giannis running pick-and-roll actions would force defenses into impossible decisions. Put simply, Steph's three-point shooting and Giannis' dominance in the paint and post would keep opponents constantly off balance, creating a nightmare scenario that Brooks believes the league simply isn't ready for. Especially when both these players are still in their All-NBA-esque years.
" I heard the Warriors, bro. That'd be so crazy. To like get a screen and roll with them you're running to fu–ing Steph in trying to stop a three, and he throws to Giannis for a dunk. Imagine you have Giannis there instead of Draymond working on the two-man game ," Brooks said. " Jimmy is gone ."
Giannis and Steph can have a realistic chance of winning together
But one thing to be extremely careful about is that the roster construction around Antetokounmpo would be just as critical as landing him. For instance, what became clear during his time sharing the floor with Damian Lillard is that Giannis thrives when paired with a strong defensive anchor.
So, that reality makes the idea of moving on from Draymond far less appealing. Keeping the core of Curry and Green intact would give Giannis the structure he needs - Dray's defensive IQ, vocal leadership and accountability would allow Antetokounmpo to play with greater freedom offensively while occasionally operating as the team's primary rim protector.
With one of the league's most intimidating enforcers in Brooks getting scared with just the prospect of Giannis and Steph sharing the court, one could only imagine what would happen if this pairing of Curry and Antetokounmpo actually becomes a reality.
