Madison Square Garden is, without question, the most iconic venue in the NBA world. From countless legendary moments to the overall atmosphere that surrounds every single game night, everything happening in the 2 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York , feels magical. After all, they don't call it the Mecca of Basketball without a reason.
And over the years, the famous celebrity row has also become a legendary spot in its own right. Actors, musicians, media personalities and former athletes regularly find themselves sitting courtside whenever the New York Knicks are playing at home.
For fans watching on TV, it often looks too good to be true, almost as if the stars simply show up and get the best seats in the house. But as one former Knicks player recently revealed, getting those seats for free often comes with a few expectations attached.
Shumpert spills the beans
Iman Shumpert was drafted with the 17th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Knicks, and he immediately felt the unique atmosphere that comes with playing inside the iconic venue. The Garden was simply different.
Out of all the celebrities he remembers seeing during his Knicks days, Shumpert especially enjoyed playing in front of actor Denzel Washington, retired NBA legend Isiah Thomas, or media personality Stephen A. Smith. According to the former guard, Smith in particular would always make sure to talk about the game all night long afterward, which only made him compete that much harder.
But while some celebrities do pay for their tickets or hold longtime season seats, like legendary Knicks fan Spike Lee, the organization often hands out courtside seats to big stars for free as well. However, according to Shumpert, those tickets usually come with a catch.
"New York is trying to do that. It's for the star, you don't get the free tickets for nothing, you better be touchable. Getting out them dabs, we need them autograph, take them pictures with them kids. Sign them basketballs. Yeah, we need that! They ain't giving out free tickets…" Shump said in the recent episode of the "Shump Street" podcast.
Basically, Shumpert explained that nothing really comes for free.
"They like, 'Do your appearance.' This is an appearance. You don't just get to go to the Knicks game. I learned that when I came back to the Knicks. When I came back with a suit on, I learned that. You got to earn your free tickets," the retired guard added. "Now the people that pay for their tickets, the everybody, the season tickets, and all that, try and touch them. They tell you, 'Don't touch me.'"
The Garden is still a special place for every basketball fan
Of course, not every celebrity sitting courtside at MSG gets their tickets for free. Many of them are longtime supporters of the team and proud season-ticket holders who have been part of the Knicks culture for decades. Names like Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan and many others have become almost as recognizable at Knicks games as the players themselves.
Still, Shumpert admitted that he truly understood how the whole system works only after he retired and returned to the arena in street clothes, no longer as a player but as a spectator. Because at the Mecca of Basketball, even watching the game can sometimes be part of the show.
