The Baltimore Orioles added veteran outfield depth on Saturday after agreeing to a minor league contract with Tommy Pham , a move that quickly drew attention because of an important opt-out clause that could impact the club's roster plans within the next several weeks.

The Orioles continue searching for consistency during an uneven 2026 season. Baltimore entered Saturday at 20-25, sitting third in the American League East behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays and second-place New York Yankees while trailing the division lead by 10 games. The club also continued its three-game series against the Washington Nationals after dropping Friday night's opener 3-2 while dealing with injuries across the organization, including top prospect Dylan Beavers remaining sidelined with an oblique injury. With the team still trying to stabilize its outfield production, adding an experienced veteran like Pham gives Baltimore another potential option moving forward.
Pham recently became available after a brief stint with the New York Mets , where he appeared in nine games before electing free agency earlier this season. The veteran outfielder brings extensive major league experience along with a right-handed bat that could eventually provide additional lineup depth if Baltimore decides to promote him to the active roster.
The New York Post's Jon Heyman shared another important detail about the agreement on his official X, formerly Twitter, account shortly after news of the signing became public.
"Pham has a June 12 opt-out #orioles"
The opt-out clause creates flexibility for both sides. If the Orioles do not add the veteran outfielder to the major league roster by June 12, he can leave the organization and return to free agency. Reports also indicated the contract would pay Pham a prorated portion of roughly $1.25 million if he reaches the majors during the season.

Although the agreement is only a minor league deal, the move still carries significance for Baltimore's outfield depth. The Orioles gain a low-risk veteran option with major league experience, while Pham receives another opportunity to prove he still belongs on an active roster during the 2026 season.
