Curt Cignetti likes what he sees from his defense, and the numbers back up his confidence. Coming off a dominant victory that featured a second consecutive shutout and a 38 point unanswered run to finish the game, Indiana's head coach made it clear during his Monday press conference that his team is finding its identity at the right time.
After weathering a brief period of adversity early in Saturday's contest, the Hoosiers completely flipped the script. Indiana out gained its opponent 520 to 180 in total yards while racking up three fourth down stops on defense. For Cignetti, watching his squad respond to early game turbulence was the most encouraging sign of the afternoon. You are going to have those periods during the season, Cignetti noted, emphasizing how critical it is to handle adversity correctly. The defensive unit certainly answered the call, locking down the field and allowing zero points over the final three quarters.

A big reason for the success on defense has been the play of safety Preston Zachman . Recognized as the defensive player of the game, Zachman delivered a key one on one tackle to preserve the shutout. His versatility has become a major asset for defensive coordinators trying to keep players fresh while maintaining communication across the field. Cignetti highlighted Zachman's ability to learn and excel at free safety, strong safety, and rover. He praised the safety as a highly intelligent player who communicates adjustments smoothly and handles heavy assignment loads without missing a beat.
That depth is beginning to pay dividends across the entire defensive backfield. With minor injuries forcing rotations early in the season, younger secondary members have picked up significant game reps. Ryland Gandy and Jaylen Bell have both logged a large volume of snaps, building real depth behind returned starters like Jamari Sharpe . Cignetti acknowledged that having young players step up under pressure turns potential roster issues into long term advantages as the schedule toughens.
Now, that defensive resolve will face a much stiffer challenge as Indiana transitions out of its non conference slate. The coaching staff is strictly focused on process and week to week execution rather than looking ahead to postseason aspirations. With a stout defensive foundation laid down through three weeks, Cignetti expects his group to maintain their physical edge and continue swarm tackling, dominating up front, and protecting the scoreboard as Big Ten competition begins. Every snap will require intense focus as the competition elevates, but this defensive unit has shown it possesses both the physical talent and mental toughness needed to hold firm against top tier conference rivals all season long.
