When you look at the final score in Indiana's 13-6 overtime win over Michigan, it's pretty obvious that the Hoosiers' defense was the biggest reason they escaped Ann Arbor with a victory. Curt Cignetti and Co. held Michigan without a touchdown for the entire game, limiting the Wolverines to just 57 rushing yards on 42 attempts. Indiana also recorded four sacks, 10 tackles for loss and forced two turnovers. Even when the offense struggled, the defense continued to make plays, including a game-winning stand in overtime. It wasn't always pretty, but Indiana's defense was outstanding when it mattered most.
In a close game like Saturday's, using a tool like Pro Football Focus allows us to see what happened on a player-by-player basis and gives some insight as to how it really went. It's not gospel, but there are some things that just don't show up in the box score that can tell another part of the story.
Ferrell was Indiana's highest-graded defensive player, earning an impressive 83.7 overall grade across 74 defensive snaps. His biggest contribution came in coverage, where he posted an outstanding 88.2 grade. Ferrell finished with eight total tackles and an interception, while PFF credited him with six solo tackles and four defensive stops. He was targeted three times, allowing just two receptions for three yards. His ability to make plays in coverage and provide support against the run was a major reason Michigan struggled to generate offense.
Jones continued to be a reliable presence in the middle of Indiana's defense, earning a 76.2 overall defensive grade across 75 snaps. He was particularly effective against the run, posting an 80.6 run-defense grade and an 82.3 tackling grade. Jones finished with eight total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and also recovered a Michigan fumble. PFF credited him with three defensive stops and zero missed tackles. Tucker finished with four total tackles and was credited with one quarterback hurry by PFF. His ability to occupy blockers and disrupt Michigan's rushing attack helped Indiana control the line of scrimmage. With the Wolverines struggling to establish any consistency on the ground, Tucker's performance was an important part of the Hoosiers' defensive success.
Indiana's defensive front generated 21 total quarterback pressures according to PFF, including three sacks, two quarterback hits and 16 hurries. Kellan Wyatt and Tobi Osunsanmi each generated three pressures, while Rolijah Hardy led the team with six. Hardy also recorded two sacks and nine total tackles according to the official box score.
Linebacker A.J. Harris earned an impressive 83.1 tackling grade, while safety Preston Zachman led the team with an 85.1 tackling grade. Ferrell wasn't far behind at 83.5, highlighting Indiana's ability to consistently bring Michigan's ball carriers to the ground.
