Everything about the Toronto Maple Leafs ’ recent general manager search has been uncomfortable. It started with the organization’s CEO, Keith Pelley, giving an awkward post-mortem on Toronto’s brutal 2025-26 season , leaving fans with limited hope that things would change. After hiring a search firm for the vacant front office positions, the Maple Leafs landed on franchise legend Mats Sundin to be a senior advisor and ex-Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka to be the team’s new GM. The Maple Leafs’ introductory press conference for the pair continued to be awkward, according to Chris Johnston via X, formerly Twitter.
The Toronto media is one of the most savage in the entire NHL. They hold the Leafs to a high standard, and when that standard isn’t met, they give plenty of grief to whoever is in charge. It was one of the worries about hiring the inexperienced Chayka, and the media did their best to hold his feet to the fire early.
The media fired shots at whether he was ready for the job, and did nothing to make the press conference a welcoming one. In one way, it’s good for the new GM to see what he is getting into, but in another, it wasn’t a great way to start this new relationship after a rocky history.
The organization believed that bringing in Sundin along with Chayka would be the perfect way to show that they value their past and understand the fans’ frustrations. If the Maple Leafs’ introductory press conference was any indication, it might not be a shield that works for Keith Pelley’s team.
