There has been plenty of speculation about the Detroit Tigers trading Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline. However, there are questions about whether it will happen after the Tigers swept the Yankees in the Bronx this week, and whether the team should sell at the deadline, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

"About those Tarik Skubal trade rumors….the Detroit Tigers sweep the Yankees for the 1st time since 2008," Nightengale wrote on X.
The Tigers are still 38-49 and eight games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central, and six games behind the final wildcard spot. Injuries have decimated the Tigers and put them in this spot. Because of that, the trade rumors have grown louder.
The Skubal trade rumors have taken center stage this season, mainly due to two factors. The first factor is that Detroit will have to decide soon whether to extend him. Of course, the team's struggles have also made it clear that there is an opportunity to sell when Skubal is at his peak. Ironically, he too has struggled, both with injuries and other issues this season.
Skubal is 4-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 11 starts. Overall, he has been slightly worse than in 2025 and 2024, when he was the reigning AL Cy Young winner. The Tigers have not decided what they plan to do with Skubal. For now, they are keeping their options open. If they can continue winning and climb back into the playoff race, then they might forget about trading him and focus on attempting to make a title run.
