Boston Red Sox hurler Brayan Bello had a solid bounce-back performance against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday as the team chose to utilize an opener ahead of the 27-year-old again.
The stark difference between Bello's performances with and without an opener has been eye-opening. In seven starts, Bello has a 9.68 ERA and has struggled, but the right-handed hurler has allowed just two runs in 18 1/3 innings pitched across his three appearances utilizing a starter, boasting a 0.98 ERA.
Despite only allowing two runs in his three performances with an opener, Boston is only 1-2 during those games. One problem the Red Sox faced in those games was giving up early runs, as Jovani Morán, who has been operating as the opener for Bello, has allowed one or more runs in the first inning in each of the three games.
MassLive's Sean McAdam urges the Red Sox to consider using a different pitcher to open for Bello moving forward.
"I understand the need to utilize an opener in front of Brayan Bello," McAdam wrote on Sunday. "What I don't understand is why it has to be Jovani Moran , who's clearly not suited for the role. Moran has appeared three times as an opener, and has given up one run once and multiple runs twice."
Despite his struggles in his three starts, Morán has been great for Boston this season, posting a 3.38 ERA in 17 appearances. Aside from his starts as Bello's opener, the 29-year-old reliever has not allowed a single run in his other appearances in May.
It would not be surprising to see the Red Sox look to use another pitcher to open for Bello if Morán continues to struggle.
