After pulling out victories in three straight games, including an emotional win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, the Cleveland Browns laid an egg in Week 5 . Cleveland's offense was bogged down in its 17-12 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday in what was a rain-soaked mess.
One of Cleveland's young wide receivers, KC Concepcion, exited that game early on because of a head injury, which was gutting for the Browns' offense. It did, however, lead to an opportunity for young wideout Isaiah Bond, who had rarely played prior to that point this season.
There were ups and downs for Bond over his season-high 49 offensive snaps.
Bond had a few low points, but quarterback Deshaun Watson had his back postgame following the loss. He touched on how Bond hasn't had reps, so some grace is required.
Bond had a very encouraging training camp, and his speed is undeniable. Those burners led to him posting some big plays in college at Alabama and then Texas, and he popped at times in the latter stages of last season with Cleveland as a rookie. With his deep-threat capability and burst, Bond amassed 18.8 yards-per-catch last year in what amounted to 18 receptions.
In what was basically his first legitimate outing of 2026, Bond did have nice moments. He finished with three catches for 74 yards and led the Browns in receiving.
However, Bond did have a crucial drop with 2:22 remaining in a key situation when the Browns could have had a new set of downs driving in Jets territory with an eye on retaking the lead. He also had an instance in the second half where he did have a nice catch for 30 yards, and while it was a rainy day, after that, he didn't seem to attempt to turn upfield when he had the defender beat.
It's unknown if there was a legitimate possibility to get more yards from there, but the decision was a bit of a head-scratcher, given how Cleveland's offensive performance was so spotty in the game.
Earlier on, Bond couldn't haul in a pass in the end zone on a play where Watson found him. In fairness, it wasn't the easiest catch, particularly in the rainy conditions. Granted, it was strange that Bond didn't have gloves on.
Regardless, the speed will always be the main selling point for Bond getting opportunities going forward. He has the potential to take the top off the defense, as evidenced by his near 19 yards per catch as a rookie.
The critical point still remains. Bond's catch rate was 40.9 percent last season, and his drop rate was 6.8 percent.
For Bond to warrant more opportunities with the Browns, it's going to be predicated on him capitalizing when intermediate and/or shot plays come his way. He has shown flashes of big-play ability, but Bond has to shore up his hands for when those looks come .
If that plays out going forward, even with Concepcion on the field with Bond at times potentially, Bond could be another meaningful option in the vertical passing game for Cleveland. That appears to be a big "if" at the moment pertaining to Bond, though.
Speed kills, so the Browns could maybe have lightning in a bottle with Bond if he establishes consistency.
