The Giants found an offensive matchup they should keep feeding, even as their quarterback situation changes.
Isaiah Likely has 41 catches through seven games, one short of his previous career high. Only two other tight ends have topped 40 receptions in their first seven games with a team, the Giants noted .
That pace will invite record talk. The more useful question is how New York keeps the tight end involved when opponents devote extra attention to him and Malik Nabers.
J.J. McCarthy supplied a different passing threat in his first Giants start, completing five passes of at least 20 yards against Houston. He also had five such completions in the late portion of the previous game. Those plays do not all belong to Likely, but they show why a defense cannot assume New York only wants short throws.

Likely's value is in giving the quarterback an answer between those opportunities. His 41 catches are already close to the 42 he recorded at his previous career best with Baltimore, and his presence gives defenses another player to locate before focusing exclusively on Nabers.
I'd keep moving Likely around and use two-tight-end looks when they fit the opponent. The goal is to make the defense declare whether it will treat him as a receiving threat or defend the run with heavier personnel. That's my proposed approach; the staff has not announced a new package.

The alternative is to spread the field with more wide receivers and let Nabers dictate coverage. McCarthy's downfield ability makes that appealing, particularly if a defense gives New York favorable one-on-one matchups outside.
Likely's current reception pace is not a guarantee he will break Jeremy Shockey's franchise tight-end record of 74. Opponents adjust, targets vary, and the Giants still have to protect their quarterback.
The point is not to force every throw to Likely. It is to preserve the threat he creates while McCarthy grows into the offense, especially with Philadelphia and Washington coming after the bye.
